Karasuyama

Basophils in the limelight

Basophils tend to be the forgotten cells in immune responses. However, Karasuyama and colleagues highlight their critical importance in IgG-mediated anaphylaxis via their secretion of platelet activating factor. Preview by Galli and Franco.

Watowich

Stopped by STAT5

Dendritic cell (DC) precursors express receptors for hematopoetic cytokines including Flt3-ligand and GM-CSF. Watowich and colleagues show how signaling from these two cytokines is integrated molecularly, and how the transcription factor STAT5 plays an inhibitory role in plasmacytoid DC development. Preview by Manz.

Bevan

CD4+ T cell memory determinant

The requirements for memory CD4+ T cell formation after an acute infection are not well defined. Bevan and colleagues find that T cell receptor avidity for antigen is likely to play a key role.

Raulet

Watching for tumors

NKG2D is an activating receptor commonly associated with NK cells and CD8+ T cells. By deleting this receptor from the animal, Raulet and colleagues determine that it is important in the in vivo surveillance against certain tumors. Preview by Ljunggren.
